  5. AHHH.. I just got done listening to the Edward Burns podcast, and not only am I in shock, but sickened too.. This guest, is just completely full of shit.. I work as a low level worker in films, and this guy simply just eroads an already ridiculous downfall of our industry. You even called him on his bullshit, but I understand.. he's your guest, and you can't embarrass him on your show. But when this guy just sits up here and tells people that everyone can and should 'make a movie', it simply encourages every idiot to show up in Hollywood, and call themselves a 'producer'. Meanwhile, I spend thousands of dollars on an education, 20 years networking in the biz, and a 100 thousand dollars on equipment, just so I can get a job in 'Hollywood'... and because of idiots like this, I have to spend more and more of my day on the phone, explaining to be people why I won't on their movie for FREE. I don't give a shit what siminar told you everything is FREE.. it's not with me.

I'm sure this guy Edward is trying to sell his hawking his next book (basically telling people they can make a million in the film biz), but I can't even fathom the damage it does to the film industry ecosystem.

Jeff, you need to hold these peoples feet to the fire a bit more, and watch them come apart like yesterdays newspaper.

... And NO, I'm not a CEO of a movie company, just someone who tries to eak out a meager living in this biz. I call myself a 'day labor' in the film biz.

    1. This is the same kind of response I've seen from people in both the photography and filmmaking world. "Old-timers" who spent a fortune on education and equipment upset at a new generation of artists succeeding without spending the fortune you did. As wtmess said, it's technology and the sea of change. There's a whole new paradigm of filmmaking coming on the scene. No use calling Ed full of sh## just because you don't like it. Either adapt or die. You can't get paid a big chunk of change just because you paid a lot for education and equipment. You need to SHOW why you're worth what you're worth. And yes, unfortunately, since there are a lot of lower priced players out there now, the competition is harder and you have to change up your game. You need to consider new business models because the old ways are history. I strongly suggest reading "Who Moved My Cheese" by Spencer Johnson and "Linchpin" by Seth Godin.

Since your handle is "Borg," you of all people should understand this:
      "Resistance is futile."

(FWIW, I'm not trying to be a smart-ass. I'm totally sincere. I wish you the best.)

  6. Borg, the industry is going through a sea change, and its not Burns' fault. Technology did it. I'm sure your investment in education and equipment wasn't a waste - quality will always rise to the top despite how many hack, 5D filmmakers are out there. And there will always be people (i.e. producers, advertisers, audience members, et al) who will pay for quality. Tarantino agrees with me: http://mashable.com/2009/07/25/youtube-comiccon/
And if Newlyweds is a crap movie, it will sink without a trace. But Burns' has found a filmmaking method that suits his sensibilities, and I'm happy for him.
